This qualification is designed for learners aged 16 or over. It is a vocational qualification that will prepare you for further study at level 3 within the hair and media make-up sector.

Entry onto this qualification can be via previous achievement of a Level 1 qualification in beauty therapy or hairdressing and/or a successful skills test and interview.

The units within this qualification include all the elements required to provide you with a sound basis for further study. The three mandatory units cover the art of photographic make-up, health and safety and how to create an image based on a theme. You will also have the opportunity to further develop your understanding and skills by selecting optional units, which could include; dressing hair, skin tanning, body art, themed face painting, plaiting and twisting hair, shaping and colouring eyebrows, apply make-up and instruction on make-up application.

Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the skin, health and safety, hair and media make-up products and equipment. You will develop a range of technical skills enabling you to prepare the skin and apply a variety of make-up products, using different techniques. You will also develop a range of basic technical hairdressing skills, which will prepare you for the next level of learning in this sector.

You will be assessed on your occupational competency by creating a portfolio including comprehensive photographic evidence. Your assessor will test your knowledge, understanding and practical competence through a variety of assessment methods including observations and online tests.

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to support you to progress to the next level of vocational learning, career opportunities also exist as a junior hair and make-up artist in a variety of contexts, including Commercial hair and beauty salons, Independent,self-employed, mobile or home-based settings
